As a child, I lived from the age of nine on the Embankment in London, directly opposite Battersea Power Station. These views of the river really started my interest in painting, and I’ve been working in London ever since, and obviously other places too. It is still urban subjects that attract me.

The places that really interest me are difficult to record using oil paints, because of all the practicalities of using easels, and so on, in the middle of London or any town. I always work directly from the subjects. So using pastels has opened up a lot of new possibilities. They are the kind that have a rich and deep effect in their colours, similar to painting.
